Over the years, there have been a variety of names or titles assigned to this, however, they essentially all have the same meaning.

Saying that you are a Secret Shopper, a Mystery Shopper, a Brand Standards Evaluator, a Mystery Diner, a Secret Flyer, etc., are all basically the same.

In short, if you are anonymously evaluating a business, such that the employees think that you are a regular “Joe” or “Joanne” customer, yet you are there to evaluate the custom service, and/or inspect the location for brand standards and or employee integrity, then you are a Mystery Shopper.

Each job has the expectation that you complete the assigned review while interacting as a regular customer, but a customer with the expectation of inspecting cleanliness and store readiness, asking specific questions regarding a product or service, and possibly making a purchase as part of the visit that day.

Following the visit, the completion of the work, requires the filling out of an on-line survey, attaching any required images and/or receipts, and fully documenting the experience before submitting.

There are some basic requirements that an individual would need to meet in order to a successful mystery shopper

• Fluent in English for all English based assignments
• Fluent in French for all French based assignments
• Have access to the internet
• Have an email account which is checked regularly
• Have the ability to provide expanded details including explanation and/or elaboration for all Yes and No answers, as required.
• Have the ability to be objective.
• As questionnaires are never to be used during the interaction (paper or electronic) the ability to have clear recollection of details is critical.
• Most mystery shopper assignments are scenario based, requiring that you meet and follow a set of specific instructions and/or criteria.
• Have the ability to report promptly. This would include the original submission, as well as any required follow up.
